NIPR SHRIMP Laboratory manages and operates the Sensitive High Resolution Ion Micro Probe (SHRIMP), which is a high precision Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (SIMS), and rock processing equipments such as Selfrag. SHRIMP is a kind of mass spectrometer and is characterized by ion microprobes making in-situ isotopic and chemical 'surface' analysis of solid targets by bombarding the sample with an ion beam with a diameter of several micrometers. NIPR SHRIMP Laboratory has two types of SHRIMP, namely SHRIMP IIe with single collector and SHRIMP IIe/AMC with Advanced Multi-collector, for development and contribution of polar science and general earth science. NIPR SHRIMP Laboratory also offers scientists analytical service as the Inter-University Research Institute.
